, but israel and the united states are not celebrating. they both tried but failed to block the u.n. move. former u.n. ambassador john bolton joins us. nice to see. could this have been prevented? >> absolutely. this is a reflection of the obama administration to take this issue seriously. it was demonstrated last october when the palestinian authority was made a member of the u.n. scientific and cultural organization, when it never should have been. palestine is not a state. that's a fact. when the u.n. engages in this kind of activity it shows a real lack of administration commitment to stop it from happening. >> greta: what does it mean as a practical purpose? >> it has a couple of practical implications. the first is the general assembly having decided that palestine is in a state, it's now in a position to go to every other u.n. specialized agency and get admission, which will trigger off a cutoff of u.n. funding, number one. number two, i think there will be a reaction in congress. senator orrin hatch has said he'll introduce legislation to cut off funding for the u.n. itself. final

.s. believes and has consistently believed for decades that only direct peace talks between israel and the palestinians can achieve a long lasting settlement. not through international organizations such as the united nations. though, the u.n. could eventually be helpful once there is a peace. the united states, canada, and very few others here voted in the negative. the palestinians didn't get all the european support they wanted. this morning actually canada is recalling some of its ambassa r ambassadors from new york and in the middle east for consultations probably for security reasons. canada gave a very public opposition speech before this vote. but the -- you mentioned is it symbolic, is it political, what are the significance -- what is it? it could be all of it, because now the palestinians could join international organizations and treaties such as the international criminal court and perhaps challenge and go after and accuse israel for war crimes for any future actions, maybe join aviation treaties, maybe control the water off its coast in the middle east, it's all uncl

as u-n members got ready to vote.. 138 nations approved the move - which basically statehood. israel and the u- s had been fighting the decision - and are now trying to play it down. it won't immediately change the lives of palestinians....since the area in question is firmly under israeli control. still - palestinians welcome the global recognition. u.s. officials say they're preparing to recognize syria's opposition council as the legitimate representative of the syrian people. that's expected to happen in a few weeks...and would mean more support for the rebel group trying to oust syrian president bashar assad. the u-s is expected to offer more humanitarian aid -- but no arms support. several u-s allies have already recognized the council. stay with us, more news after the break. have a good night. here you go. you, too. i'm going to dream about that steak. i'm going to dream about that tiramisu. what a night, huh? but, um, can the test drive be over now? head back to the dealership?
